About Us

Cold Steel is a company dedicated to making strong, sharp knives. Over the last three decades, Cold Steel made many innovations that have helped to define the knife industry. Progressive accomplishment, including the introduction of the checked Kraton handles, and the tanto point blade styles have gone from curiously interesting features to industry-wide hallmarks of quality and sophistication. New ground was also broken with the introduction of unique new blade steels like San Mai III and Tri-Ad Lock & locking mechanism for folding knives. Of course Cold Steel will always look to the future, constantly striving to make the world's strongest, sharpest knives. That goal as elusive and difficult to achieve as it is, has been the same for the past forty years.

Cold Steel is a knife and tool company dedicated to creating the strong, sharp knives, swords, tomahawks, machetes, cutlery, tools for every day carry: EDC. Quickly adopted by Military, Law Enforcement Special units, Emergency Services Personnel, Self Defense professionals as well as members of the Martial Arts community, Cold Steel quickly became renowned for quality, strength, reliability and dependability in every day carry (EDC). Our diverse and varied line-up quickly grew to include not only a massive selection of folding knives (from smaller "EDC" blades, to our iconic giant “mega-folders”) but fixed blades, swords, sabers, pole-arms and halberds, as well as hunting gear, spears, blowguns, axes, machetes, tomahawks and tools!

Over the decades, Cold Steel has introduced pioneering new materials and designs that have helped to shape the world of the modern knife, edged weapons and tools. From the introduction of the checkered Kraton handles, and the “Americanized” Tanto blade, to the inclusion of innovative new blade steels like San Mai III and game-changing locking mechanisms (like our Tri-Ad Lock). As we look to the future, Cold Steel continues to bring new levels of strength, safety and performance to the market, providing products that you can rely on – Anytime, Anywhere!

Exactly what it claims to be
I bought this for a sword that I could do practical work with while waiting for the apocalypse to occur. It does exactly that. My experience with the sharpness and overall quality of the product mirrors that of the dozens of other reviews here, so I won't repeat that. What I did notice in several reviews were complaints about the finish on the sword. It claims to have a "bake-on" coating, but many reviews have complained about uneven application of the finish and other issues. Saying it is "bake-on" makes me think it is like Duracoat or any of the other indestructible firearms coatings. This is NOT the case.Well, I found a solution to the finish issue, albeit inadvertently. The sword comes with an obnoxious product sticker on the blade just in front of the hilt. Of course this sticker would not remove cleanly, and left glue and paper residue on the blade. Being the obsessive-compulsive nut that I am, I wanted to clean that off to have a nice clean blade (you know, to hack at muddy sticks and such). So I soak the sticker mess in denatured alcohol to soften up the glue. Not only does the sticker residue come off, but so does the black finish on the blade. In fact, the finish stripped off more readily than the sticker residue. Having already started down that road, I stripped the finish off both sides of the blade. Now I have a bare metal blade. I will say that the black finish hides a VERY rough piece of steel underneath, with many tool marks and other roughness-- but really, who cares? Now I have a nice shiny-ish blade on my cutlass machete! I'll take it!
